Looking for a place in Rio de Janeiro to practice one of the world’s fastest growing strength and conditioning programs? Then you should try CrossFit! The sport is not a traditional, specialized training program like doing isolated weight lifting or using complicated exercise equipments; when doing CrossFit, you learn to use your whole body, for example by doing pushing and pulling exercises, running, rowing, squatting and climbing ropes. That’s why the motto is to prepare the body ¨not only for the known, but also the unknown!¨
What is CrossFit?
This workout is an intensive strength and conditioning exercise program founded by Greg Glassman in 2000 – This new exercise is taking the world by storm.
CrossFit combines different types of exercises such as strength training, body weight exercises, gymnastics, explosive plyometrics, speed training, Olympic and power-style weight lifting with some non-traditonal equipment, as kettlebelts, sand-bags and medicine balls, which are only some of the equipments that you are using. You also do variations of push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, climbing ropes and different jumps.
The workout is structured in a way that you get challenged to do a certain number of repetitions with the new exercise following right after, and there is a very little rest in between. When you get more advanced in CrossFit, you will start competing against other participants to see how fast you can complete the daily workout.
The workout is always highly intense and short and each day CrossFit posts a new Workout of the Day (WOD) on their webpage. Normally the WOD takes about 7-30 minutes to complete, is quite demanding and you never know what you will be training that day.
Where to do CrossFit in Rio?
There are several places to practice CrossFit in Rio de Janeiro. For example CrossFitLeblon in Leblon, CrossFit Carioca in Copacabana and there are also a few studios in Barra, like Inox Crossfit and Crossfit Posto 9 ( for more information about the studios see below).
The WOD at CrossFitLeblon is quite challenging, and includes a bit of everything. It can be between 1-3 WODs per day (Some indoors and some outdoors). The WOD changes from day to day. Normally the WOD is posted on their Instagram / Facebook the same morning or the night before.
Before or after the WOD, you practice strength skills or the technique of the day. For example: One day can be to improve your strength of doing bench-press and another day can be to practice your running technique.
The trainer at CrossFitLeblon speaks fluent English, so don’t hesitate to sign up for a class if your Portuguese isn’t that good yet.
