Bico do Papagaio Hike

Hike up to Tijuca Forest’s second highest peak, the Bico do Papagaio (987-m), to get a real jungle feeling. This beautiful trail is located in the middle of the Tijuca forest, the world’s biggest urban rainforest. Explore the Bico do Papagaio, Parrot’s Beak in English, a two hours hike inside the great urban forest. The hike is easy, well marked and Bico do Papagaio Peak is considered to be one of the classic walks of Tijuca forest.

When to hike: All year, except if it has been raining the previous days.

What to bring: Hiking boots/Trainers, comfortable clothing, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, some snack and water.

How to get to Bico do Papagaio

The Bico do Papagaio hike starts from an idyllic location called Bom Retiro inside of the Tijuca National Park. The best way to get there is by taxi or car. If you go by car, use GPS and type in “Bom Retiro”. There’s parking and even a basic restroom. See map below for further information.

The Hike

Starting point of the hikeWhen you get to the parking lot of Bom Retiro, you will easily see the starting point marked by a sign with a map of the track.

The trail starts with a light walk which continues for about 30 minutes until the last junction where its start being quite steep all the way until you reach the top of Bico do Papagaio. You really feel that you are inside of the jungle while you are hiking Bico do Papagaio. Especially as  it’s pretty likely to see some animal wildlife here, mostly monkeys and different species of birds.

Turn left

After about 5-10 minutes of easy hiking, you will get to a junction where you need to turn left. It’s well marked, so it’s easy to see where to go.

Most of the trail is sheltered since you are walking inside of the jungle. If it has been raining during the previous days, the trail up to Bico do Papagaio can get a bit slippery and uneven and sometimes you might need to climb under or over fallen trees.

Keep hiking for about 15-20 minutes on the path and you will get to another junction where you need to turn right, again the directions are well marked.

Almost thereContinue on the path for another 10-15 minutes and you will get to the last junction where you need to turn right again. From here the track starts going up quite a lot on a rugged trail, where you also sometimes need to climb over roots and rocks.

View from the topAfter you have finished the steep part of the trail, you will reach the top of Bico do Papagio. Now that you have finished the hike, enjoy the marvelous 360 degree view of the entire city of Rio de Janeiro. Observe the impressive urban rainforest and you will see how it interacts with the city of Rio de Janeiro.

View from the topOver the summit, you also get a spectacular view of Tijuca National Park and other big peeks can be seen like Pico da Tijuca, Pedra da Gavea, Pedra do Conde; Cocanha Peak, Corcovado, Dois Irmãos and others.

Resturant Os EsquilosYou probably get hungry after the Bico do Papagaio hike. Stop by the restaurant “Os Esquilos”, it’s only a 5 – 10 minute drive from Bom Retiro. Os Esquilos offers an international cuisine menu with Brazilian specialties. It’s located in the heart of Tijuca National Park.
