Are you looking for a hike where you can escape the busy city of Rio de Janeiro and enjoy the countryside? Hike up Costão de Itacoatiara (220m) and combine adventure and relaxation. This beautiful track is located next to the 1,5 km long beach in Itacoatiara, Niteroi. The hike is easy to medium, it’s short but involves a part of climbing.

How to get to Costão de Itacoatiara
The hike Costão de Itacoatiara starts from the visitors reception station in Itacoatiara, close to the beach in Itacoatiara. The best way to get there is by car using GPS. Just type in Itacotiara as destination. When you reach the beach, turn left and follow the street Av. Beira Mar until the end. Then turn left into the street Rua das Papoulas and follow the road for a few hundred meters. You will see the visitors reception on your right side. See map below for more details.
When you get to the starting point at the Visitors Reception in Itacoatiara, you need to sign a visitor’s book before setting off. The starting point of Costão de Itacoatiara is well marked, so it’s easy to see where to go. The hike itself is about 800 meters long and 220 meters high. The trail takes approximately 30 -40 minutes in each direction.
Right from the start of the hike, the trail starts going up a bit, and will keep doing so until you reach the top. The beginning of the hike is sheltered and it’s not uncommon to see some animal wildlife here like lizards and different species of birds.
After about 5-10 min of hiking you will get to a mini plateau, here you need to turn right to reach Costão de Itacoatiara.
Right after leaving the mini plateau, you will get to a steep part where you need to climb. If you are not used to climbing, some part of the rock surface can be a bit difficult since there is not too much to hold on to (especially in the beginning). From here you just follow the rock surface until you reach the top. It’s all well marked.
When you reach the top of Costão de Itacoatiara, try to spend some time. Bring some food and have a picnic while you are watching people surfing at the beach below you. On a clear day the view from Costão de Itacoatiara is spectacular. You can see all the way to Rio de Janeiro and make out major peaks like Pedra da Gávea, Dois Irmãos, Pico da Tijuca and the famous Sugarloaf Mountain.
After hiking Costão de Itacoatiara is it nice to stop by the beach for a bath, watch the surfers or for some refreshment at some of the kiosk at the beach.
