Are you still looking for an original canga (beach towel) or bikini? Then you’ll love the Copacabana Night Market in Rio de Janeiro! This market is the perfect way to make the best out of your Rio de Janeiro holiday: Just lay at the beach the whole day and go shopping at night. If you live in Rio, you don’t have sacrifice your weekend to go to a market. The Copacabana Night Market takes place every day (except Sundays) from 6pm until midnight.
How to get to the Copacabana Night Market
The market is held on Avenida Atlântica between the streets Rua Bolívar and Rua Sá Ferreira (around Posto 5). See map below for exact location.
Souvenirs at the Copacabana Night Market
Unlike the Hippie Market in Ipanema, the Copacabana Night Market doesn’t have many original stalls for furniture or home decoration. However, it has a lot to offer in terms of typical tourist souvenirs and it’s the best place to shop for cangas. There’s a great variety with lots of patterns that you won’t find at the beach and you can get cangas for 20-25 BRL. If you’re lucky you might even snatch one for 15 BRL (prices depend on fabric and pattern). Of course you’ll also find your usual market goodies as t-shirts, bikinis, paintings, necklaces and much much more. It’s also a nice place to buy postcards, you have plenty of cards to choose from and the motifs tend to be nicer than the ones at the kiosks that sell postcards all over the city.
The best part about the Copacabana Night Market however is it’s location and time schedule. You can go shopping before having a Caipirinha at Copacabana Beach or have dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area. Or, if you don’t want to carry your shoppings around all night, you just go have dinner/drinks first and end the evening with a stroll over the market. As the Copacabana Night Market takes place each night except Sundays, there’s no hurry. Take a look and if you’re not sure whether to buy a certain souvenir or not, you can always think about it and come back the next day (uhm – night).
